NBA Guru 2017-18 Season Win Total Plays

Prior to last season I asked the NBA Guru to share his thoughts on some 2016-17 NBA season win totals he liked and those plays went 4-0. The NBA Guru is happy to share his thoughts again on a few 2017-18 NBA season win totals. Once again, these will be considered as Strong Opinions.

Boston Under 55.5 -141 (Bookmaker)

The Celtics have only 4 players on their roster who were on the team last year.  That’s a ton of turnover.  I expect it will take time for the team to gel and for all the players to learn each other’s tendencies.  Many believe adding Hayward will make the Celtics better, but the player he’s essentially replacing in Jae Crowder was very underrated in my opinion and actually had a better plus/minus than Hayward did each of the last two seasons.  While I think Boston will be more dangerous come playoff time than they were last season I don’t expect them to get 3 more wins than they did last season.

Chicago Over 22.5 -110 (Heritage)

Yes, Chicago lost Jimmy Butler.  He’s a stud.  But is he worth a 19 win drop?  They lost Dwayne Wade and Rajon Rondo as well which should actually help them as the team was worse with either on the floor last year as neither veteran has the shooting to stretch the floor.  Younger players like Valentine, Felicio, Mirotic, and Zipser should improve with another year of experience under their belts.

Miami Over 42.5 -145 (BetOnline)

I believe Miami is an underrated team coming into this season.  They started the season 11-30, yet in the final 41 games were 30-11 just missing the playoffs.  Over the course of the season the team learned how to optimally use their players.  They had some bad injury luck that made their overall record look worse than it would have been otherwise.  Their division got easier as Atlanta decided to enter rebuild mode letting go of Millsap, Hardaway, Sefalosha, and Howard.   In an Eastern Conference that has only gotten worse since last year with the departure of Jimmy Butler, Paul George, and Paul Millsap, if Miami can avoid any major long term injuries I think they easily get 43 wins and we’ll be watching them on TV come May.
