PITTSBURGH (-5.5) vs Las Vegas

Pittsburgh’s defensive front was dominant in week 1 with edge defender Melvin Ingram (5 pressures) replacing Bud Dupree. DT Cameron Heyward and edge rusher TJ Watt are both among the league’s top 10 in pass rushing efficiency. Overall, the Steelers had 19 pressures on Josh Allen and 58% of them came within 2.5 seconds of the snap.

Derek Carr won’t have any time in the pocket this week with Heyward taking advantage of the Raiders missing both starting guards. Rookie RT Alex Leatherwood surrendered two sacks in his first game, and it may get worse against Watt. Carr also won’t be able to depend on his go-to receiver TE Darren Waller (19 targets in week 1) because he will be blanketed by All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Pittsburgh was outgained by the Bills in yards per play and only won due to a special teams touchdown. Ben Roethlisberger averaged just 7.7 air yards per attempt which is less than his career-low last year of 8.1. Casey Hayward didn’t allow a reception last week in his 39 coverage snaps and he will make life difficult for the Steelers wide receivers on the outside. Edge defenders Maxx Crosby, Yannick Ngakoue, and Carl Nassib combined for 23 pressures and the Raiders might finally have a pass rush if the trio can stay healthy. Unfortunately, interior defender Gerald McCoy (5th in pass rushing efficiency his last full season in 2019) was carted off on Monday and will miss the remainder of the season.

Our model favors Pittsburgh by just 3.1 points (with a predicted total of 48.0 points) but the matchups favor the Steelers.
