Wake Forest won for us last week as a Strong Opinion as a home dog to Clemson, as veteran quarterback Sam Hartman took advantage of a bad Clemson secondary for 319 yards on 32 pass plays. Hartman is great (8.6 yards per pass play against teams that would allow 7.0 yppp to an average quarterback) but the Demon Deacons don’t run the ball well (just 4.1 yards per rushing play) and Florida State defends the pass very well (5.0 yppp allowed to 3 FBS teams that would combine to average 6.4 yppp against an average defense). The Seminoles defense is just as good as Wake’s offense.
The advantage for FSU is when they have the ball. Noles’ quarterback Jordan Travis has completed 66% of his passes while still throwing the ball down the field and he’s averaged 9.3 yards per pass play against FBS defenses that would combine to allow just 5.7 yppp to an average quarterback. Wake Forest, meanwhile, has been just average defending the pass (5.8 yppp allowed to quarterbacks that would combine to average only 5.7 yppp against an average defense) and I expect Travis to have another strong game. Overall, Florida State’s offense is 1.9 yppl better than average while the Demon Deacons’ defense is just 0.3 yppl better than average.
