Donnel Pumphrey broke Marshal Faulk’s San Diego State career rushing record in the win over Cal a few weeks ago and Pumphrey’s great numbers (200 yards per game at 8.2 ypr) could get even better against a South Alabama defense that’s allowed an average of 251 yards at 6.0 yards per rushing play against teams that would combine to average only 4.5 yprp against an average defense. Being horrible against the run is not a recipe for beating the Aztecs and I wouldn’t be surprised if Pumphrey ran for 300 yards. The problem is that San Diego State eats up a lot of clock with their conservative game plan, which makes it harder to extend a lean. My model takes pace into account and favors the Aztecs by 18 ½ points – so the number is fair.
