Buffalo (-3)  26   Northern Illinois  21

This game will come down to how will the strong Northern Illinois defense can defend Buffalo’s big play offense featuring future high NFL draft pick WR Anthony Johnson, who has averaged 18.2 yards per catch and 11.6 yards per target. NIU has done a good job against better than average offensive teams, holding Utah, Ohio, and Toledo to a combined 5.2 yards per play, which is 1.0 yppl lower than what those teams would combine to average against an average defensive team.

Buffalo was 0.7 yards per play better than average in scoring 36 points against Temple, the only really good defense they faced this season and the Bulls  averaged over 7 yards per play against the 4 mediocre defensive teams that they faced (Eastern Michigan, Rutgers, Central Michigan and Miami-Ohio). Overall, Buffalo was relatively better against better defensive teams and they should score enough to top an NIU offense that has averaged just 19.9 points and a pathetic 4.6 yards per play this season (against teams that rate the same as Buffalo’s mediocre defense).
