FIU returns 14 starters from last year’s 5-7 team but that squad was much worse than their record, as the Panthers rated at 1.2 yards per play worse than average offensively and 0.8 yppl worse than average defensively in 2015 after adjusting for their easy schedule. FIU will be better offensively with quarterback Alex McGough returning along with 8 other offensive starters but even a solid improvement still has the attack at 0.7 yppl worse than average. This year’s FIU defense is less experienced (5 returning starters after having 8 last season) but that unit isn’t likely to be significantly worse than last year.
Indiana was an average team last season (on a national scale) but an improved defense will more than be offset by an offense that figures to be significantly less potent now that quarterback Nate Sudfeld is in the NFL along with star RB Jordan Howard (6.2 ypr last season!). Indiana should still be pretty good offensively and their defense is likely to be improved with their top 5 tacklers returning along with outstanding cornerback Rashard Fant, who defended 22 passes last season.
Indiana is projected to be slightly worse than average on a national scale this season but the Hoosiers have more than enough to beat up on lowly FIU, as my ratings favor IU by 15 points in this game.
