Is Arizona State’s pass defense really this bad? The Sun Devils allowed 367 pass play yards at 10.8 yards per pass play to Northern Arizona in week 1 and followed that up by giving up 531 pass play yards at 9.7 yppp in last week’s 68-55 win over Texas Tech. It’s unlikely that ASU will continue to be that bad defending the pass (I projected them about average in pass defense this season) and UTSA is far below average in my pass offense rankings – so the Sun Devils should be able to contain the Roadrunners’ offense, which has averaged only 5.2 yards per play in two games against bad defensive teams Alabama State and Colorado State.
The Arizona State offense isn’t as good as the 56 points and 554 yards per game they averaged against Northern Arizona and Texas Tech, who both have horrible defenses, but the Sun Devils are better than average offensively and should put up good numbers against a sub-par UTSA stop unit. The Roadrunners have only allowed 18 points per game at 4.9 yards per play but that still rates well below average given the offensive units they’ve faced. My ratings favor ASU by 19 points with a total of 57 points but this is a letdown spot for ASU after last week’s high scoring week’s high scoring home win over Texas Tech. In fact, the Sun Devils apply to a 114-197-12 ATS road favorite letdown situation and they could be looking past this game to next week’s Pac 12 opener against Cal.
