ARIZONA (-7) vs Washington

Kliff Kingsbury talked about using more tempo in the off-season and we saw it in week 1. The Cardinals ran 41% of their snaps in the no-huddle last week and combined for 139 plays with the 49ers (most of the week). We should see the up-tempo style again on Sunday.

Of the 40 passes Kyler Murray attempted last week, 40% went to new target DeAndre Hopkins. Of the 14 catchable passes, Hopkins turned eight into first downs, which tied for the second-most for the week. Hopkins should be able to exploit mediocre CB Fabian Moreau for another good game this week.

Washington rookie edge-rusher Chase Young rushed the passer 34 times in week 1, recording two sacks, one hit, one hurry, and a strip sack. Arizona’s offensive line may be without LT DJ Humphries (questionable) so Young has a chance to build on his success. However, Kyler was able to use San Francisco’s strong pass rush against them by finding running lanes by stepping up in the pocket. Murray ran for 91 yards and a touchdown last week and is a threat to run again if Young and fellow edge defender Ryan Kerrigan get too far up the field in their rushes.

Washington’s offense played much worse than the scoreboard indicated at the end of the game. Dwayne Haskins averaged just 4.7 yards per pass play and ranked last in completion percentage versus expectation in week 1. Haskins faced the 6th-highest pressure rate and it isn’t going to get much easier on Sunday with All Pro edge rusher Chandler Jones lining up across from LT Geron Christian, who surrendered a sack, two QB hits, and a hurry last week.

Our model favors the Cardinals by just 3.6 points, with a predicted total of 45.7, but Washington’s upset win over division rival Philadelphia sets them up in a negative 28-80-1 ATS letdown situation this week.
