Lean – Under (50.5) – West Virginia (-2.5)  23   VIRGINIA TECH  21

Virginia Tech is terrible offensively but the Hokies’ defense is thriving under new defensive coordinator Chris Marve. V Tech has yielded just 12.3 points per game on an average of  just 183 total yards at 3.2 yards per play. The 3 teams they’ve faced are all below average offensive teams that would combine to average only 4.4 yppl against an average defense, but giving up only 3.7 yppl to Old Dominion and just 3.0 yppl to Boston College are really good performances.

West Virginia is the best offense that the Hokies have faced so far but the Mountaineers have been only 0.2 yppl better than average offensively, as their 6.4 yppl have come against 3 teams that would allow 6.2 yppl to an average offense.

West Virginia’s defense (0.4 yppl better than average) has a significant advantage over Virginia Tech’s offense, which is 1.1 yppl worse than average so far, but overall these teams are pretty closely matched.

My preseason rating would have favored West Virginia by 2 points and using season to date ratings I get the same thing. I’ll lean Under in the windy conditions (13 mph with gusts into the high 20s).
