PITTSBURGH (-21)  35   Syracuse  10

Pitt is a very good defensive team and the Panthers look improved offensively after putting up a ton of points in their 55-0 win (in just 50 minutes of play) over a pretty decent Austin Peay team that won 11 games last season, including two FCS playoff games. Syracuse quarterback Tommy DeVito is one of those horrible quarterbacks that continues to get chances because of a super strong arm but the reality is that DeVito is a horrible quarterback that hangs onto the ball too long and takes far too many sacks. DeVito was 1.0 yards per pass play worse than average last season (5.5 yppp against teams that would allow 6.5 yppp to an average quarterback) and he averaged a pathetic 2.0 yards on 38 pass plays in last week’s 6-31 loss to a North Carolina team not known for their defense. Pitt’s pass defense is once again among the best in the nation and I don’t see how the Orange will be able to score more than a couple of times in this game.

Syracuse is also worse than average defensively, although they played better than expected last week, but my ratings project 35 points for a Pitt attack that could be better than I rate them (-0.2 yards per play currently).
