South Carolina is playing their best football of the season and the Gamecocks are a better team than Clemson.
South Carolina’s offense struggled some early in the season under inexperienced quarterback LaNorris Sellers (just 10 of 23 and 3.0 yards per pass play against Old Dominion) but he’s hit his stride lately – averaging over 10 yards per pass play in the last 4 games, including 10.7 yppp in the most recent SEC games against Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, and Missouri.
Clemson has a good pass defense and I don’t weigh those recent games anymore than the earlier season games, but I expect the Gamecocks to score enough points to win this game, as they should move the ball well on the ground against a mediocre Clemson run defense (5.1 yprp allowed).
Clemson’s offense has been great against weaker defensive teams but the Tigers have mostly struggled against good defenses and the Tigers have averaged only 4.7 yards per play over their last 3 games against FBS opponents Louisville, Virginia Tech and Pitt, who all have better than average defensive units. South Carolina’s defense is at an even higher level and the Gamecocks’ elite defensive line is going to give Clemson’s banged up offensive line trouble in this game. The Tigers allowed 9 sacks the last two games against FBS opponents and South Carolina will exploit that shaky offensive line.
