NC State returns 16 starters from a team that was better than average on both sides of the ball last season. The Wolfpack return 9 starters on offense, including quarterback Ryan Finley and his top 4 receivers (based on yardage). Finley out to be at least as good as he was last season and the offense would go to another level if they could find a good rushing attack (0.6 yards per rushing play below average last season). The NC State defense was 0.5 yards per play better than average last season and should be a bit better this season with 7 returning starters, including star DE Bradley Chubb, who has 10.5 sacks and 11.5 other tackles for loss.
South Carolina enters year two of the Will Muschamp era and I see huge improvement for the Gamecocks this season. Ten starters return on offense and that unit should go from bad (0.7 yppl worse than average) to average while the defense also projects as improved after being 0.4 yppl better than average last season. However, despite the improvement my ratings favor NC State by 7 points (it would have been 12 ½ points based on last year’s stats).
